4. Data Validation and Dropdown Lists

Lesson 4 of 10
Task 1 of 3
  1. Make a dropdown list of statuses in C2:C7, using F2:F4 as the source.

Lesson theory

Data Validation stops people from typing just anything into a cell:

  • List: the cell gets a ▾ arrow and you pick a value from the list. The source is a range, for example $F$2:$F$4;
  • Whole number between … and …: for example, a rating from 1 to 5.

Select the cells, click Data Validation and set the rule. Then try typing a wrong value: the trainer, like Excel, will not accept it.

fx

Enter — commit · F2 — edit · F4 — $ in a reference · Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V — copy and paste · Ctrl+Z — undo

Esc or F6 — leave the sheet for the «Check» button · Shift+Tab in the first cell — back to the page
